Common Questions – Child Sleep Training:

child sleep training St. Louis MissouriWhat is the best age to start infant sleep training?

At around 4 months, most babies can begin to organize their sleep into regular and longer daytime naps and consolidated nighttime sleep. But parents can begin to establish good sleep habits even before birth. Pickles & Ice Cream Sleep and Baby Consulting works with children from birth through age 8.

How much sleep does my baby need?

Babies need lots of sleep. So do new parents!

Will my child fall asleep if he or she is tired?

Most parents put their children down to sleep at the wrong times. Overtired children are often hard to get to sleep.

How quickly can you help get my baby on a sleep schedule?

When parents follow Pickles & Ice Cream Sleep and Baby Consulting’s child sleep training advice closely and stick to the schedules, most babies adjust to their new schedule within one to two weeks.

What is Pickles & Ice Cream’s preferred method for sleep training?

Pickles & Ice Cream Sleep and Baby Consulting is educated on many approaches. Our sleep plans are customized to fit your parenting style.* We stay updated on all sleep methods and recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Isn’t letting a baby cry harmful?  I’ve read that it does permanent brain damage.  Plus, it just seems cruel.

No parents likes to hear their child cry.  Pickles & Ice Cream goal is to establish HEALTHY child sleep habits and to have your child be well rested. My goal is for you to have a baby who is so well-rested that he/she won’t cry at all when it’s time for sleep. (It IS possible!) That said, during the process of teaching your child how to get herself/himself to sleep, she/he may cry. There is no valid research that indicates that crying damages a child emotionally or physically. Most “research” that states otherwise is the result of work done with babies who have been neglected in underdeveloped countries. There are a lot of strong opinions about this topic. Pickles & Ice Cream Sleep and Baby Consulting practices on valid scientific research, experience and the advice of board certified pediatricians.

Can’t I just read a sleep training book and do this on my own?

Yes, and hopefully you pick up the right sleep book for you and your child. These sleep books can be very general and hard to read when you don’t have much sleep yourself. Pickles & Ice Cream Sleep and Baby Consulting can offer you the information you need along with the support and guidance as you work through the plan that I create specifically for you and your child.

I don’t live near you…can I still work with Pickles & Ice Cream?

Yes! Pickles and Ice Cream Sleep and Baby Consulting works all over the United States and world! We do in home consults, Skype/Facetime, email  and phone consulting.

*Pickles & Ice Cream Sleep and Baby Consulting respects all parenting styles but does not work with parents that want to continue sleeping in the same bed as their infant.
